President Joe Biden commended this arrest, highlighting the bravery and collaborative efforts by the Mexican government, during a recent meeting with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in San Francisco. U.S. and Mexico that led to this significant capture.
Biden stated, “Ensuring he faces justice behind bars for his crimes is a win for the security of both our nations.”
U.S. authorities allege that Perez holds a high-ranking position as an operative or assassin for the Sinaloa Cartel, previously led by Guzman, currently serving a life sentence in Colorado for his involvement in drug trafficking and violence. Perez is believed to be responsible for overseeing the security of Guzman’s four sons, known as “Los Chapitos.”
In a news statement on Thursday, Garland emphasized that “He and his security forces have engaged in acts of violence, intimidation, and abduction against rivals, witnesses, and others opposing the Chapitos, resulting in fatalities.”
A million dollar reward was offered in April for information that leads to Perez’s capture, and this arrest follows nearly three years of chase in the United States. He is the subject of federal indictments pertaining to drug offenses, weapons, and crimes including witness retaliation.
While Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the fourth Chapito, is being held in custody in Chicago pending unrelated accusations, the other three were involved in the same case. Every brother has refuted the federal criminal accusations brought against them.
The four “principal leaders” of the Sinaloa Cartel have been summoned by the Department of Justice to face prosecution in the US. Perez’s apprehension signifies a noteworthy achievement in the continuous endeavors to tackle organized crime and fortify security collaboration between the United States and Mexico.
